Resources for play: from MDO and Weave. Some Warwickshire and Coventry museums are fine (even award winning) exemplars of welcoming places for the under 5s. Two years ago we supported 9 museums with the Five Fun Things for the Under Fives training and marketing campaign (see elsewhere on this site http://wp.me/p1yTVl-kI) although that programme of support is no longer running we continue to support and encourage museums becoming attractive, and welcoming, to ALL ages of user.
Recently, at a Network training day in craft skills,WeaveRecycle the Creative Recycling Centre and Educational Training Provider gave a presentation of their resources. We’ve also managed to support about 14 museums to become members of the organsation in order to get access to some fantastic materials for creative activities on their own site.
Weave have now published their training programme for the new year and it includes a comprehensive set of activities for Early Years. While these are not specifically museum oriented, volunteers and paid staff involved with audience development, community engagement and family friendly activities may find some of these courses exceedingly useful. Please do consider investing in the training for your staff. (we do not have training bursary pot … but if stuck… ask me).
Shake that body, Inspiring Environments for Under Twos, Engaging Boys in Imaginative Play and the Great Outdoors all seem great possibilities for our kind of buildings and grounds.
