On October the 1st the country’s very first Museum UnConference is being convened in Birmingham.
What is an UnConference?
Well, see here, where it’s all explained, or in the meantime you could recall Humpty Dumpty who preferred to receive Un-Birthday presents rather than measly old Birthday ones.
In short, it’s a forum for like-minded people (in this case anyone who visits, likes, works, wants to work, etc with museums, galleries, culture venues).
It starts by anyone attending pitching ideas of what to talk about. You might come with a discussion in mind or you might be there to listen. Or you might be there for networking. Or cake.
People share their ideas for a session and roughly 5 or 6 are chosen. Those not speaking can choose which talk they’d like to attend. The talks are usually less than an hour.
… and then it happens
No its not mad..
The structure (sic) has been working well for a number of years, but there hasn’t been one for museums and galleries… so a number of people in Birmingham and the West Midlands decided now was the time to make it happen – that’s the kind of enterprising sprit the West Midlands is known for!
Why come?
We don’t know what subjects might get talked about, but they could be crucial and profound or totally frivolous.. or both.
It is a place where ideas are conceived and nurtured by the ‘most unlikely’ mix of people.
Old themes are mulled over and decanted into sparkling crystal glasses.
You’ll get to meet, hear and talk to people you may never get to meet in any other event – no hierarchies, just common consent.
Who, How and Where
We initially thought this would be of interest to West Midlands museumy peeps, but people from all over are beginning to sign up … so don’t miss out
It takes place at ThinkTank Millennium Point in Birmingham – it’s central, has lots of rooms to meet in and does lovely food..
How do you sign up? go here to the Eventbrite site..http://museumcamp.eventbrite.co.uk/. already more than 30 people have signed up … we have limited capacity so get in there
